Beili Liu har i over tjue år laga romlege komposisjonar som undersøker tema som arbeidskraft, migrasjon og minne knyta til kultur, samt sosiale og miljømessige omsyn.
Den seinare tida har Liu forska særskilt på dei polare nordområda. Ho har hatt fokus på kompleksiteten i dei økologiske, geopolitiske og miljømessige utfordringane der, men òg sett på klimakrisa i eit globalt perspektiv.
Draumar om det høge nord // Dreams of the High North er basert på kunstnaren sine omfattande undersøkingar i dei arktiske områda i Noreg i perioden 2021-2022 som Fulbright-stipendiat.
I utstillinga syner kunstnaren ein serie installasjonar og videoarbeid som kan seies å vere “stads-responderande”. Kunstnaren seier sjølv: "Eg er kalla til å besøke Arktis, ein stad som kroppsleggjer og forsterkar sorgene over og håpet for vår felles planet.”
Arbeida er forankra i historia til landskapet, og dei er omfattande - både når det gjeld bruken av materiale og prosessen bak. Liu held performancer i det skjøre arktiske landskapet, der ho flettar saman tema som menneskelege handlingar, den hurtig utviklande klimakrisa og menneske sitt ønske om håp og læking. Beili Liu sitt prosjekt omhandlar samanhengane og sårbarheita som ligg i vårt forhold til naturen og miljøet med utgangspunkt i handverk, materialitet og ei djup respekt for det arktiske urfolket sine livserfaringar og kulturelle fortellingar.
Beili Liu er fødd i Jilin i Kina og bur og arbeider no i Austin, Texas. Ho er for tida professor i kunst ved University of Texas. Beili Liu er utdanna ved University of Michigan, Ann Arbor i 2003 og University of Tennessee i 2001. Liu er representert av Hua Gallery, UK, Galerie an der Pinakothek der Moderne, Germany, and Vessel Gallery, Oakland, CA. Liu har ei rekkje utstillingar bak seg både i USA, Europa og Asia. Ho har tidlegare hatt separatutstillingar på Hå gamle prestegard i 2016 og 2011.

For over two decades, Beili Liu has been making spatial compositions that examine themes of migration, cultural memory, labor, social and environmental concerns. Liu's current artistic research focuses on the complex ecological, geopolitical, and environmental concerns facing the Circumpolar North and the urgency of the climate crisis on a planetary scale.
Dreams of the High North presents a series of site-responsive installations and performances based on Liu's extensive research in Arctic Norway as the 2021-2022 Fulbright Arctic Chair.
As the artist states, "I am called to visit the Arctic, a place that embodies and amplifies the sorrows and hopes of our shared planet." Rooted in the essence and the complex history of the High North landscape, Liu entwines human action, the rapidly advancing climate crisis, and humanity's desire for hope and healing through on-site performances within the pristine yet fragile Arctic Landscape, and immersive material-and-process-driven installations.
Through the lens of labor, handcraft, materiality, and sincere respect for the Arctic indigenous people's lived experiences and cultural narratives, Dreams of the High North speaks to the interconnectedness and fragility of our relationship with the natural environment.
